The "New" Dynamics AX
Microsoft has officially announced today, finally, the new version of our favorite ERP called “Dynamics AX” or “New Dynamics AX”, in line with other products published in the cloud like Visual Studio Online (now called Visual Studio Team Services).
Omitting any version number, they draw attention to the objective of converting AX into a software as a service platform (SaaS), so that the specific version is not too important when receiving constant and frequent automatic updates. Personally (there is no confirmation of this) I would bet that the on-premise version that will be published in a few months will include a version number as usual, to differentiate it from its sibling in Azure.

The first release of the new Dynamics AX will be published in the first quarter of 2016 as planned and as I already mentioned a few weeks ago, it will be available only for Azure implementations and mainly oriented towards new customers and re-implementations, since there are no data migration tools yet. The first public preview will be published a little earlier, in early December, at which point we can start publishing details about the new platform!
What we can tell you for now is what everyone already knows:
- New web interface
- Based on Azure
- Native development tools in Visual Studio. X++ is a new language in the .NET stack
- Improved lifecycle to facilitate the deployment of changes
- LCS as a fundamental part of the project lifecycle
